Ikigai test: what it can tell you (and what it can’t)

A test won’t hand you your purpose in five questions. But a good one can give you something more useful: a mirror to start looking at yourself.

“Ikigai test” is one of the most frequent searches on the subject, and it’s understandable: it would be so convenient if a few questions told us what we came here for. It’s worth lowering expectations before taking any, not to discourage you, but so the test really serves you.

What an ikigai test can’t do

No test will tell you what your ikigai is. Not because they’re badly made, but because ikigai isn’t calculated, it’s recognised over time and with honesty. Most “ikigai tests” going around are really the four-circle exercise dressed up as a questionnaire: they ask what you love, what you’re good at, etc., and give you back what you yourself wrote. Useful to get organised; not a diagnosis.

Distrust any test that promises to hand you your purpose. What is handed over in five minutes is forgotten in five minutes.

What a good test can give you

A well-designed test doesn’t give you the answer: it gives you a starting point. It can show you more clearly how you work —how you decide, how you relate to others, how you keep your pace, how you read the ground before stepping on it— and that is valuable material to start looking at your life. It doesn’t replace the work of recognising your ikigai; it prepares it.

An honest inventory: an ikigai test that doesn’t promise your purpose

That exact idea is behind IKIGAIER’s ikigai test, an honest inventory of your ikigai. It doesn’t tell you what your ikigai is or suggest a profession. It explores the two dimensions I work with in El Ikigai que no te contaron: Active Ikigai (what you do, what you are good at, what you contribute) and Conscious Ikigai (whether you are present in what you do, whether you can be who you are). It gives you back what holds you, what deserves attention and an exercise from the book for your week. Free, no sign-up.

It doesn’t tell you what to do with your life. It tells you where you are starting from.

And after the test, what?

A test is a door, not a goal. Once you have it, the interesting part begins: taking it into your daily life and asking yourself the questions no questionnaire answers for you. For that you have the guide on what ikigai is and the concrete steps to find yours.
